क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञविभागयोग

हे भारत! सभी क्षेत्रों में क्षेत्रज्ञ भी मुझे ही जान। क्षेत्र और क्षेत्रज्ञ का जो ज्ञान है — वही ज्ञान मेरे मत में वास्तविक ज्ञान है।

O scion of Bharat, I am also the knower of all the individual fields of activity. The understanding of the body as the field of activities, and of the soul and God as the knowers of the field — this I hold to be true knowledge.

वह क्षेत्र क्या है, कैसा है, इसके विकार क्या हैं, यह किससे उत्पन्न हुआ है, वह क्षेत्रज्ञ कौन है और उसके प्रभाव क्या हैं — यह सब संक्षेप में मुझसे सुनो।

What that field is, what it is like, what its modifications are, from what it arises, who the knower is, and what his powers are — hear all this from Me in brief.

यह ऋषियों द्वारा बहुत प्रकार से गाया गया है, विविध वेद-छंदों में अलग-अलग वर्णित है तथा युक्तियुक्त और निश्चयात्मक ब्रह्मसूत्र के पदों द्वारा भी निरूपित किया गया है।

This has been sung by sages in many ways, in various Vedic hymns, and presented with reasoning and certainty in the aphorisms of the Brahma Sutra.

पञ्च महाभूत, अहंकार, बुद्धि, अव्यक्त (मूल प्रकृति), दस इन्द्रियाँ और एक मन तथा पाँच इन्द्रियों के विषय —

The five great elements, ego, intellect, the unmanifested primordial nature, the ten senses, the mind, and the five objects of the senses —

इच्छा, द्वेष, सुख, दुःख, शरीर (संघात), चेतना और धृति — यह क्षेत्र अपने विकारों सहित संक्षेप में कहा गया है।

Desire and aversion, happiness and misery, the aggregate (body), consciousness, and the will — all these comprise the field and its modifications.

अमानित्व, अदम्भित्व, अहिंसा, क्षमा, सरलता, गुरु की उपासना, शरीर और मन की शुद्धि, स्थिरता और आत्मसंयम —

Humbleness, freedom from hypocrisy, non-violence, forgiveness, simplicity, service to the Guru, cleanliness of body and mind, steadfastness, and self-control —

इन्द्रिय-विषयों में वैराग्य, अहंकार का अभाव और जन्म, मृत्यु, बुढ़ापा, व्याधि और दुःखों में दोष का दर्शन —

Dispassion toward the objects of the senses, absence of egotism, and perception of the evil in birth, death, old age, disease, and misery —

पुत्र, स्त्री, घर आदि में आसक्ति और अत्यधिक प्रेम का अभाव तथा इष्ट और अनिष्ट की प्राप्ति में सदा समचित्त रहना —

Non-attachment and absence of excessive fondness toward children, spouse, home, and so on; and constant equanimity of mind toward desirable and undesirable events —

मुझमें अनन्य योग से अव्यभिचारिणी भक्ति, एकांत स्थान का सेवन और मनुष्यों की भीड़ में अरुचि —

Unflinching devotion to Me through exclusive bhakti, preference for solitary places, and disinterest in the company of worldly people —

अध्यात्मज्ञान में निरंतर स्थिरता और तत्त्वज्ञान के अर्थ (परमात्मा) का दर्शन — यह सब ज्ञान कहा गया है। इससे विपरीत जो है वह अज्ञान है।

Constancy in spiritual knowledge, and philosophical pursuit of the Absolute Truth — all this is declared to be knowledge, and what is opposed to it is ignorance.

मैं उस ज्ञेय वस्तु को कहूँगा जिसे जानकर मनुष्य अमरता को प्राप्त होता है। वह अनादि परब्रह्म है जो न सत् कहा जाता है और न असत्।

I shall now reveal to you that which ought to be known, and by knowing which one attains immortality. It is the beginningless Brahman, which lies beyond existence and non-existence.

वह ब्रह्म सब ओर हाथ-पाँव वाला, सब ओर नेत्र, सिर और मुख वाला तथा सब ओर कान वाला है — वह संसार में सबको व्याप्त करके स्थित है।

With hands and feet everywhere, with eyes, heads, and faces on all sides, with ears on all sides — That exists in the world, enveloping all.

वह ब्रह्म सभी इन्द्रियों के गुणों को प्रकाशित करने वाला होकर भी सभी इन्द्रियों से रहित है, आसक्तिरहित होकर भी सबका भरण-पोषण करने वाला है तथा निर्गुण होकर भी गुणों का भोक्ता है।

He illuminates all the senses and yet is without senses. He is unattached yet sustains all. He is beyond the three modes of nature, yet the enjoyer of all the modes.

वह ब्रह्म समस्त प्राणियों के बाहर और भीतर भी है, चर और अचर में भी है। वह सूक्ष्म होने से अज्ञेय है, दूर में भी है और समीप में भी।

He exists outside and inside all living beings. He is animate and inanimate. He is too subtle to be known or perceived. He is far away, yet He is near.

वह प्राणियों में अविभक्त होकर भी विभक्त-सा स्थित है। वह ज्ञेय ब्रह्म प्राणियों का भरण-पोषण करने वाला, संहार करने वाला और उत्पन्न करने वाला है।

Though apparently divided among all beings, that Supreme Brahman exists as one undivided whole. Know that Brahman as the sustainer, destroyer, and creator of all beings.

वह ज्योतियों का भी ज्योति है और अंधकार से परे कहा जाता है। वह ज्ञान है, ज्ञेय है और ज्ञान से प्राप्त होने वाला है — और सबके हृदय में स्थित है।

That Brahman is the light of all lights, and is said to be beyond the darkness of ignorance. It is knowledge, the object of knowledge, and the goal of knowledge, seated in the hearts of all.

इस प्रकार क्षेत्र, ज्ञान और ज्ञेय — ये सब संक्षेप में कहे गए। मेरा भक्त इन्हें जानकर मेरे भाव को (मुझे) प्राप्त होता है।

Thus the field (body), knowledge, and the object of knowledge have been briefly explained. Understanding this, My devotee attains My divine nature.

प्रकृति और पुरुष — इन दोनों को ही अनादि जानो। तथा विकारों को और गुणों को भी प्रकृति से उत्पन्न जानो।

Know that both material nature and the living entities are beginningless. Know also that all modifications and the three modes of nature are born of material nature.

कार्य और कारण को उत्पन्न करने में प्रकृति कारण कही जाती है, और सुख-दुःखों के भोग में पुरुष कारण कहा जाता है।

Nature is said to be the cause of all material activities and effects, whereas the living entity is said to be the cause of the various sufferings and enjoyments in this world.

प्रकृति में स्थित पुरुष प्रकृति से उत्पन्न गुणों को भोगता है। गुणों के साथ संग ही इसके अच्छी और बुरी योनियों में जन्म लेने का कारण है।

The soul in the body experiences the three modes born of material nature. Attachment to these modes is the cause of its birth in good and evil species.

यह परम पुरुष इस शरीर में साक्षी, अनुमति देने वाला, भरण-पोषण करने वाला, भोक्ता, महेश्वर और परमात्मा — इन नामों से कहा जाता है।

Yet in this body, the Supreme Person also dwells — the witness, the permitter, the sustainer, the enjoyer, the great Lord, and the Supreme Soul.

जो इस प्रकार पुरुष को और गुणों सहित प्रकृति को जानता है, वह सब प्रकार से व्यवहार करते हुए भी फिर जन्म नहीं लेता।

One who thus knows the individual soul, material nature, and the modes of nature — though engaged in all sorts of activities — is not born again.

कुछ लोग ध्यान के द्वारा अपने आप से अपने में परमात्मा को देखते हैं, अन्य सांख्ययोग से और दूसरे कर्मयोग से देखते हैं।

Some perceive the Supreme Soul within themselves through meditation, others through the path of knowledge, and still others through the path of action.

परन्तु कुछ अन्य लोग इस प्रकार न जानते हुए भी दूसरों से सुनकर उपासना करते हैं। वे श्रवणपरायण लोग भी मृत्युरूप संसारसागर से तर जाते हैं।

There are yet others who, not knowing these paths, take to worship after hearing from others. They too transcend death by their devotion to what they have heard.

हे भरतर्षभ! जो कुछ भी चर और अचर सत्त्व उत्पन्न होता है, उसे तू क्षेत्र और क्षेत्रज्ञ के संयोग से उत्पन्न जान।

Whatever being is born — whether moving or unmoving — know it to arise from the union of the field and the knower of the field, O best of the Bharatas.

जो नश्वर शरीरों के नष्ट होने पर भी नष्ट न होने वाले परमेश्वर को समस्त प्राणियों में समान रूप से स्थित देखता है — वही वास्तव में देखता है।

One who sees the Supreme Lord dwelling equally in all beings, the imperishable within the perishable — that person truly sees.

क्योंकि जो सर्वत्र समान रूप से स्थित ईश्वर को समभाव से देखता है, वह अपने आप से अपने आप को नष्ट नहीं करता — और इससे वह परमगति को प्राप्त होता है।

Indeed, one who sees the Lord as equally present everywhere does not degrade the self by the self. Such a person attains the supreme destination.

जो यह देखता है कि सभी कर्म प्रकृति द्वारा ही किए जा रहे हैं और आत्मा अकर्ता है — वही वास्तव में देखता है।

One who can see that all actions are performed by material nature alone, and that the self is not the doer — that person truly sees.

जब मनुष्य प्राणियों के पृथक्- पृथक् भावों को एक परमात्मा में ही स्थित देखता है और उसी से उनका विस्तार देखता है — तब वह ब्रह्म को प्राप्त होता है।

When they see the diverse variety of living beings situated in the same Supreme, and understand all of them to be born from that one source — they attain the realization of Brahman.

हे कुन्तीपुत्र! अनादि और निर्गुण होने के कारण यह अव्यय परमात्मा शरीर में स्थित होकर भी न कर्म करता है और न लिप्त होता है।

O son of Kunti, the Supreme Soul, being beginningless and transcendental, is imperishable. Though dwelling in the body, it neither acts nor is tainted.

जैसे सर्वत्र व्याप्त आकाश अपनी सूक्ष्मता के कारण लिप्त नहीं होता, वैसे ही सर्वत्र शरीर में स्थित आत्मा लिप्त नहीं होता।

Just as the all-pervading space is not tainted because of its subtle nature, similarly the self, though present everywhere in the body, is not tainted.

हे भारत! जैसे एक सूर्य इस सम्पूर्ण लोक को प्रकाशित करता है, वैसे ही एक क्षेत्री (आत्मा) सम्पूर्ण क्षेत्र को प्रकाशित करता है।

O scion of Bharat, as the one sun illuminates the entire solar system, so does the one soul illuminate the entire field (body).

जो लोग ज्ञानरूपी नेत्रों से क्षेत्र और क्षेत्रज्ञ के इस अंतर को जानते हैं और भूतों की प्रकृति से मुक्ति को जानते हैं — वे परब्रह्म को प्राप्त होते हैं।

Those who, with the eye of knowledge, perceive the distinction between the field and the knower of the field, and the liberation from the material nature of all beings — they attain the Supreme.
